Mr. Verbrugghe joins Clipway after more than 25 years at Ardian, where he held various leadership positions, including Head of Ardian USA and member of Ardian’s Executive Committee. Headquartered in London with an office in New York, Clipway applies next-generation technology to the secondaries industry. The firm focuses on diversified LP portfolios of quality buyout and growth managers across Western Europe and North America. Clipway’s proprietary and purpose-built Tech-Enabled Secondaries System (TESS) uses continuously improving machine learning, AI and data analytics, enabling the team to efficiently extract and intelligently analyse millions of data points across the data-intensive asset class.

Vincent, Ingmar and the entire Clipway team have built a truly impressive proposition that is transforming LP-secondaries investing through the use of cutting-edge technology. I am delighted to be joining the leadership to support the continued growth of the business.

Benoît Verbrugghe, a Managing Partner of Clipway

We’re excited to be reunited as we continue to leverage our proprietary technology to bring an unprecedented level of precision and speed to investing in LP portfolios and ultimately identify compelling opportunities.

Seeing Through the Marks: Testing GP Valuations with Proprietary Data

In this edition of Clipway Insights, we have used TESS’ database to analyse how unrealised companies are valued by private equity managers. We look at a large dataset and frame those valuations in the context of business fundamentals, particularly growth, and the company’s ability to delever. We also introduce an internal valuation-to-growth metric we have developed, “VEqG” (Valuation to Equity Growth), which helps contextualise the company’s valuation multiple as it relates to the growth in its equity value (not just its EBITDA) since FY 2022. Thanks to our scalable database, we can assess this ratio across thousands of eligible companies at recent record dates, and use the conclusions to determine what could be sensible ranges of that ratio, and benchmarks.

We examine the differences between these “Small” exposures compared to “Large” exposures, which account for the top 70-80% of NAV. In particular, we look at the increased volatility in final outcomes for “Small” exposures and the potential impact on investor returns in the context of LP-led secondary transactions.
